Richard served as a First Lieutenant & Pilot on B-17G "Pakawalup" (#42-31630), 751st Bomber Squadron, 457th Bomber Group, 8th Air Corps, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Washtenaw County, Michigan prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on September 15, 1942 in Detroit, Michigan. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Skilled inspector and also as Single, without dependents.

Richard died in the "Line Of Duty" of wounds received when the "Pakawalup" crashed on February 19, 1945 in bad weather over Alconbury, England of a non-battle related incident. He had previously been awarded the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters. The the entire crew perished in this crash.
