*Pvt. E. S. Carr
Killed In
Holland Area
Pvt. Eugene Shirley Carr, aged
21, son of Mrs. Ethel B. Brawley of
1924 Eleventh avenue and the late
Arthur Eugene Carr, is another
young Altoonan who made the
supreme sacrifice for his country.
He was reported in a war department
telegram received by his
mother and step-father, Edgar L.
Brawley, Wednesday afternoon as
being killed in the Holland area of
the European theatre on May 1.
Pvt. Carr entered the United
States army on July 30, 1943, one
month after being graduated from
the Altoona High school. He went
to Camp Meade, MD, and was assigned
to the infantry. After training
for eleven months at Camp
Ellis, IL, he spent a furlough at
home. He went overseas to England
in March 1944, and was assigned
to the 1317th combat engineering
corps of Gen. George S. Patton's
3rd army. He saw service in
France, Belgium, and Germany.
Pvt. Carr was well known as an
athlete at Altoona High school. He
played fullback on the varsity football
team, was president of the ACE
league and a class leader of the
Bethel A.M.E. church where he
had part in all activities. Previous
to entering service he was employeed
at the Penn-Alto hotel.
Eugene Shirley Carr was born
Feb 21, 1924, in Altoona and resided
all his life in the city. He is
survived by his mother, step-father,
Edgar L. Brawley, and two brothers,
Pvt. Stanley Phillip Carr, with the
army in Germany, and Edgar Lewis
Brawley, at home.
