James served as a Sergeant & Engineer / Top Turret Gunner on B-17G #42-37903, 525th Bomber Squadron, 379th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in McLennan County, Texas prior to the war.

He enlisted as an Aviation Cadet in the Army Air Corps on February 5, 1943 in Dallas, Texas as Jim H. Dean.

B-17G #42-37903 took off, with a crew of 9, from Kimbolton, England on a bombing mission over Merseberg, Germany. Over the target they were hit by ground anti-aircraft fire which damaged an engine and a fuel line. They made an attempt to return to base however, based on eyewitness accounts, they had to make a crash landing. The entire crew was lost in this crash.

James was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

He also has a "Cenotaph" in the Rosemound Cemetery, Waco, Texas.
