On the 9th February at 0745 hours, Lt. Col. A. H. Boyes, having been selected to co-ordinate rear defences, handed over Command of our Battalion to Lt. Col. R. F. Oakes who had just been promoted to Lt. Col and transferred from 22nd Brigade.

The original charter given to Col. Boyes, seemed to have been changed, quickly and dramatically, as three days after handing over his own Battalion, he was appointed to command a group designated as "X" Battalion, which consisted mostly of reinforcements, recently arrived from Australia, and some men from Administration Units, at this time, not able or required to function to full capacity. Also it is believed that soldiers, being held in closed detention, or otherwise being detained pending a hearing of charges made against them, were also included in this group.

Their first move was to go forward under cover of darkness, to a gap made by an enemy break through in the front line.

During this move, "X" Battalion, was either ambushed or attacked by a strong enemy force. Col. Boyes and most of his group were killed.

We gave our today."
