Thomas Robert "Bob" Smith, 80, of Tifton, formerly of McRae, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2010. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at McRae United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in McRae. The Rev. Edwin Willis will officiate.

Born Nov. 27, 1929 in McRae to the late Alexander Peterson Smith Sr. and Throop Watts Smith. Mr. Smith was also preceded in death by one brother, Alexander Peterson Smith Jr. who died in 2007.

Mr. Smith lived most of his life in Telfair County, where he was an insurance agent with Alex P. Smith and Sons. He was a graduate of McRae-Helena High School and Emory University. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He enjoyed photography and salt water fishing and was a member of the Lions Club, Masons, Elks Club and the Shriners.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 51 years, Charlotte Wimberly Smith of Tifton, formerly of McRae; four daughters, Virginia (Allen) Kirby of Milledgeville, Carolyn (Hank) Mullis of Tifton, Frances (Nate) Rehl of Fayetteville, N.C., and Barbara Wells of Tifton; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Kirby, Kevin Kirby, Ashley Steverson, Brooke Steverson, Hollie Mullis, Jake Mullis and Bailey Wells; three step-grandchildren, Toya Mullis, Nicholas Rehl and Ryan Rehl; and one step-great-grandchild.
