Vernon Eugene Coleman, 82, passed away on Thursday August 5, 2010.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Florence (nee Acton) Coleman. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Albert Duane Coleman, Alvin Wesley Coleman, Finis Martin Coleman, Russell George Coleman, and sister Mary Alta Day.

He was born on May 23, 1928 in the Shoal Creek area of Bond County, Illinois. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Brazoria County Texas, where he attended school in Clute and Freeport Texas. He became a member of the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental, and Reinforcing Iron Workers in 1946 and remained a member for over 63 years. He entered military service during the Korean War in March, 1952 and served mostly with the Pennsylvania National Guard 176th artillery unit. He was honorably discharged in February, 1954. After the war he settled in Corpus Christi, Texas where he eventually married, raised a family, and continued working as an ironworker; ultimately becoming the business agent for Local 510 in Corpus Christi. In 1975 he went to work for the US Department of Labor (Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training) in Houston, Texas and in 1977, the family resettled in the town of Angleton, Texas where he remained for the rest of his life.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years Frances Geneva (nee Cassel) Coleman of Angleton, daughter Barbara Dodson (Jimmy) of Corpus Christi, Texas; sons William Franklin (Bill) Waggoner (Cynthia) of Corpus Christi, Texas; George Wallace (Buddy) Waggoner of Corpus Christi, Texas; Gary Coleman of Winchester, Virginina; Barry Coleman of Angleton, Texas.; and William Eugene (Bill) Coleman (Donna) of Angleton, Texas. In addition, he is survived by sons Cary Coleman (Morgan) of Indio, California; Vernon Eugene (Gene) Wentz (Bessie) of Vincent, Ohio and daughter Dale Crandall (Jerry) of Fernley, Nevada. He is survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and many friends throughout Angleton and Brazoria County.

Visitation will be held at Palms Funeral Home on Sunday August 8, 2010 from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Monday, August 9, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church in Angleton Texas with burial to follow in Angleton Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Finis Coleman Jr., Ronnie Coleman, Russell Coleman Jr., Willie Day Jr., Joshua Waggoner, Clint Waggoner, and Bryan Dodson.
