Lieutenant Hugh Smith Thompson was an observer (bombardier) assigned to the 96th Aero Squadron when it was organized on May 18, 1918. This squadron was the first in the United Air Service to have bombardment as its sole mission. The squadron was based at Amanty, France. The 96th staged its first operational raid on June 12, 1918. Lieutenant Thompson and his pilot, scored several hits on the railroad yards at Dommaray-Baroncourt on that day. Thompson spent three months in active service and participated in numerous bombing expeditions before he was killed on September 16, 1918 when his plane was attacked by two German planes and after a bitter fight went down in flames inside enemy lines.

Entered service from New York, son of John Means Thompson and Sara Glasgow.
