Suggested edit: Second Lieutenant Orville Kenneth Wilson, born 31 Jan 1861, at Rouses Point, New York, was the son of James and Susan L (Hill) Wilson of Chazy, New York. Chazy is on Lake Champlain in extreme northeastern New York State, 10 miles from the Canadian border. His father enlisted in Company E of the New York 16th Infantry 2 May 1861 (right after Ft Sumter was fired on) when Orville was 3 months old. His father survived the civil war but one of his paternal uncles did not. His mother died 28 Jul 1867 at the age of 27 or 28 when Orville was only 6 years old.

In the 1888 Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts city directory, Wilson, Orville K., is listed at 4 Market Square, under “Confectionery, Fruit, Toys, Etc.”

Orville married Sarah E. “Sadie” Adamson 4 Nov 1895 in Springfield, Massachusetts.

In the 1900 census 38-year-old Orville is living with his wife Sadie 22, mother-in-law Isabella Adamson 58, and children Irene 3 and Orville Jr., 2, at 135 Exchange Street in Chicopee, Hampden County, Massachusetts. Chicopee is on the north side of Springfield. Sadie was born in Ireland. Orville works as the overseer in a mill. A third child, Frank R. Wilson, born 6 Mar 1900, only survived 17 days and died of acute bronchitis on March 23rd.

The 1905 Springfield city directory lists Orville as “rem to N Carolina” so the family must have relocated to the Carolinas in 1904.

In the 1909 Orangeburg, South Carolina, city directory Orville and Sarah are living at 75 Sellers Avenue. Orangeburg is 40 miles south southeast of Columbia and 77 miles northwest of Charleston. Orville is a teacher at the Orangeburg Collegiate Institute.

In the 1910 census 50-year-old Orville is living with wife Sarah 33, children Irene 13, and Orville Jr., 12 at 54 Russell street in Orangeburg. Orville is a tobacco cigar merchant. They have one boarder in their home, Harry Frazier 20, who is the manager of a moving picture theater.

Lieutenant Wilson, at age 57, was the director of the 318th Field Artillery Band. His son, Band Sergeant Orville K. Wilson, Jr., was also in the 318th F.A. band.

2nd Lt. Wilson sailed for France with Headquarters Company of the 318th Field Artillery from New York City on 18 Aug 1918 aboard the SS Lapland. His person to contact in case of emergency was his wife, Sadie, back in Orangeburg, SC.

Soldiers of the Great War, Volume 3, South Carolina, lists Lieutenants: Wilson, Orville K., from Orangeburg, as Died of Disease. Lt Wilson died of bronchial pneumonia on 12 Jan 1919.

Band Sergeant Orville K. Wilson, Jr., also in HQ Co., 318 F.A., returned from Brest, France to Newport News, Virginia on the USS Siboney arriving 11 Jun 1919. His person to contact in case of emergency was his mother, Sadie, back in Orangeburg, SC.

The American Legion Post No. 4 in Orangeburg was dedicated as the Orville K. Wilson Post.
The Bamberg Herald (Bamberg, South Carolina) – 30 Jan 1919, Thu – Page 1 – ORANGBURG MAN DIES – Lt. O.K. Wilson Succumbs to Pneumonia Overseas – Orangeburg, Jan 28. – News has been received here to the effect that Lieut. Orville K. Wilson, of the 318th Fields Artillery Band, died in France January 12 of bronchial pneumonia. Official notification came to Mrs. Wilson, who at present is in Richmond, Va. It was known that Lt. Wilson was under treatment at a hospital for some time past, but his condition had not been considered very serious, and the news of his death has been received by his many friends here with surprise and deep regret.
