Dr. George L. Humbarger, 78, died Thursday, May 9, 2002, at Methodist Hospital. He was a resident of Indianapolis. He was born July 15, 1923, in Decatur. His parents were Heber and Alma (Fisher) Humbarger. He married Mary Sue (Mohr) Humbarger. She survives. Other survivors include four daughters, Jane Brewer of Indianapolis, Janice Amonette and Leslie Dixon, both of Greenwood, and Susan Wright of Camby; two sisters, Maxine Garrison of Huntington and Joann Fisher of Warren; 14 grandchildren; and a great-grandson

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lorraine (Thorton) Humbarger.

He was a professor at the University of Indianapolis from 1962 to 1986. During his tenure, he served as chairman of the business department and played a major role in developing the school's MBA program, being named coordinator of the graduate program in 1976. After his retirement in 1986, he served as adjunct instructor until 1996. He was named an honorary alumnus of the university in 1996. Previously, he taught at Southport High School and South Whitley High School, where he coached baseball, track, and basketball.

He received a bachelor of science degree from Huntington College and a master's of science and doctoral degree from Indiana University. He was a Phi Beta Kappa member.

An active 43-year member of Rosedale Hills United Methodist Church, he taught Sunday school, served on several committees and sang in the choir. He designed and created the stained glass windows in the sanctuary of the church. He was active in community affairs for several years as treasurer for the Perry Township Senior Citizens Organization and a tutor for the Oasis program at Glenn's Valley Elementary School. He was a member of Gideons.

In 1983 he was honored as a Sagamore of the Wabash by Gov. Robert Orr.

He was a veteran of the U.S Navy, having served in World War II. As a naval aviator, he continued his love of flying after the war as a flight instructor and a private pilot.

The Rev. George Hunsaker will conduct a service at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Rosedale Hills United Methodist Church. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Forest Lawn Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Home, State Road 135 Chapel, and one hour before the service at the church.

Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in White River Township.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rosedale Hills United Methodist Church or to the Gideons.
