One of Eddy County's pioneer ranchers, John Allison Lusk, is dead at age 88.

Lusk, whose ranch once covered 100,000 acres northeast of Carlsbad died today after a long illness. Funeral services will be held, Wed. (Jan. 8, 1969) at 10:00 in West Funeral Home.

Born June 27, 1880 in Hood County, Tex., Lusk came with his family to New Mexico in 1884 as they supervised the driving of a herd of cattle.

The family settled at Weed where they located a homestead claim and continued to live there until acquisition of the C.B. Eddy Ranch, now the Lusk Ranch, in 1895.

Lusk was educated in Weed public school, and at age 15 became a trail driver for the Sacramento Cattle Co.

He was a charter member of the N.M. Cattle Growers Assn., a member of the American Livestock Assn., a Mason and an Odd Fellow.

In 1933 he was married in Carlsbad to Mrs. Mae Pendleton Bates, daughter of George Pendleton, also a pioneer rancher.

Survivors include two step-children, Leslie H. Bates of Carlsbad; and Mrs. Dorothy Mae Mosley; two brothers, Aud Lusk of Carlsbad and Bill Lusk; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Joe Lusk and Mrs. Dolph Lusk of Carlsbad and Mrs. Sam Lusk of Roswell; two nephews; Gene Lusk of Carlsbad and Dolph Lusk.

Lusk lived at 304 North Canal.
