Fred served as a Staff Sergeant & Ball Turret Gunner on B-24H "Piecemaker" (#42-52368), 765th Bomber Squadron, 461st Bombardment Group, 15th Air Force, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

Fred resided in Hancock County, Indiana prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in December, 1941 at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Nursery operator and also as Single, without dependents.

Fred was "Killed In Action" when his B-24 was shot down by German Fighters over Linz, Austria during the war. Out of the crew of 10, 7 were Killed In Action and 3 became POW's.

He was decorated with the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Purple Heart, and one Distinguished Unit Badge.
