HERBERT HERRING KILLED IN ACTION

Sgt. Herbert J. Herring, 28, who had been reported missing in action over Austria since July 26, 1944, is now reported killed in action, according to word received by his mother, Mrs. Helen F. Herring, of Eagle Pass.

The B-17 (Flying Fortress) bomber on which Sgt. Herring was a gunner was lost on a bombing mission to Wiener Neudorf, eight miles south of Vienna. Maj. Gen. Edward F. Witsell, Acting The Adjutant General of the Army, reported, "Enemy aircraft attacked and damaged your son's plane and fire started in the wings. It was last seen as it left the formation 34 miles southwest of the target." Although four crew members were reported prisoners-of-war, no further information has been made available. The War Department has terminated such absence by a presumptive finding of death.

Sgt. Herring was graduated from the Eagle Pass High School and was a resident of Hopedale. He was inducted into the army in November 1941at Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas. He received most of his training in camps in the Western states, among them Ft. Lewis, Washington, Thunderbolt Field, Arizona, Camp Roberts, California, and Dalhart, Texas. Survivors other than his mother are three sisters and four brothers, one of whom is stationed in Italy.
