The first attacks launched in Belgium on 16 Dec 44 had the objective of the port of Antwerp. The second phase known as Operation North Wind by the Germans had the objective of recapturing Strasbourg. His unit was awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation for heroic participation in the battle fighting against the German 21st Panzer Division.

He had enlisted in the Army. Served during World War II. He had the rank of Sergeant. Service number was 32576212. Served with 79th Infantry Division, 315th Infantry Regiment
