PFC John Irwin (Jack) Douglas,20, son of Mr and Mrs. C Gordon Douglas
,2201 Georgina Avenue, was killed in action in Germany early in the Battle of the Saar last March 2, according to work received earlier by his parents and according to a release today from the War Department. Overseas since last September, he was first stationed in England, then, for a short time and France and then in Italy, where he spent several months near Florence and Pisa. In February he was transferred to the 253rd Infantry and attached to the 7th Army in Southeastern France.
Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, he came with is parents to Santa Monica six years ago. He attended Lincoln Junior HS one year and graduated from Santa Monica HS in June 1942. Prominent in school activities, he was a member of the Honor Scholarship Society, was active in the debate and served as Commissioner of the Forensics during his senior year. He attended the U of California at Los Angles one year where he was a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity.
Entering the Army in June 1943, he received basic training at Camp Roberts, CA where he was selected for training under the Army Specialized Training Program and was sent to Pasadena Junior College. When the ASTP program was abandoned, young Douglas was transferred to eh 13th Armored Division at Camp Bowie,TX. From there he was sent overseas.
Following news of his death, the parents received a letter from his commanding officer who wrote "John's loss is most keenly felt by the officers and men of his unit with whom he served so gallantly.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers and a sister. Gordon S Douglas, research chemist with the Goodyear Synthetic Rubber Co's plant in Torrance, CA. James S Douglas, a junior at Samohi, and Mrs Helen S Brazil, who is making her home at Ft Benning, GA. where he husband, First Lt Burton R Brazil is stationed, following a long period overseas service.
