Lionel Sydney Platt, Captain 17th. Lancers, attached Royal Flying Corps, only son of Sydney and Bertha Platt, Wargrave Manor: who gave his life in an aerial combat, North-East of Vitry-en-Artois, France. He died in the unsuccessful attacks on this village held by the Germans. He was probably shot down by Leutnant Heinrich Gontermann (1896-1917) of Jasta [Jagdstaffel] 5 flying a much superior Albatros D.III or D.V.
