Joe proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953 and was a veteran of the Korean War. He ran a local business with his brother, Lonus Pointer, for many years and in 1990, he retired from Chrysler Transmission Builders after 30 years of dedicated employment. He regularly attended Crossroads Community Church, Kokomo and Grace Baptist Church, Seneca, South Carolina. He was a member of UAW Local 685.
Surviving with his wife are two sons, William Pointer and his wife Myra of Kokomo, Indiana and Gregory Pointer and his wife Patty of Seneca, South Carolina; two brothers, Albert Pointer of Anderson, Indiana and Lonus Pointer of Toccoa, Georgia; one sister, Evelyn Turner of Seneca, South Carolina; five grandchildren, Joey Pointer and his wife June, Brooke Whitefield and her husband Jon, Brianna Pointer, Krysta Pointer and Jarren Pointer, all of Seneca, South Carolina; two great-grandsons, Travis and Ethan.
Joe deeply cherished his family and was loved dearly by all in return.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Frank Pointer.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at the Old Toccoa Baptist Church, RR3 Black Mountain Road, Toccoa, Georgia, with Pastor Frank Bearden officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time on Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Howard Community Hospital Foundation, 3500 South Lafountain Street, P.O. Box 9011, Kokomo, Indiana 46904-9011, to benefit the Oncology Department. Shirley & Stout Funeral Homes, Kokomo, and the Whitlock Mortuary, Toccoa, is assisting the family with arrangements.
