Harvey Ball was killed in action near Assoro. After the 48th Highlanders had captured Assoro and preparing to move on and take the T-road of Leonforte and Nissoria the regiment came under heavy German shelling. The last barrage of shelling killed Harvey Ball, Jim Cameron, Doug Holmes, Ray Leadbeater, Murray Whalen and Bill Thompson. Privates Carl Burke and Irving Leith died of their wounds. Harvey was initially buried in Assoro and later reburied at Agira.

Harvey was married to Gladys Ball from Wellingborough, UK and together they had one daughter, Margaret Queena who was born in 1941. His parents had already passed away and he also had one sister.
