Son of William Francis and Lydia Anne Adamson (nee Duncan), brother to Kate and William and half-brother to Annie, Bertram was born in York, England on 4th June 1883, but had emigrated to Canada by the time of the 1914 Canadian Census. In this census his occupation was given as 'photography', a family occupation which he no doubt would have picked up from his grandfather and uncle, both also photographic artists, whom he lived with after the death of his mother in 1886. He enlisted into the army on 7 Sep. 1915 at Vernon, British Columbia and would go on to serve in the Canadian Medical Army Corp., though by May 1916 he was back in England, presumably in the Canadian Military Hospital near Shorncliffe, Kent. Pvt. Adamson's body was found in woods close to Paraker Camp, Hythe, Kent with what was determined to be a self-inflicted wound to the throat.
