Lieutenant Arthur Noel Whitfeld, was the son of the Reverend Arthur L Whitfeld, MA, and Mary Ellen Whitfeld (formerly Curzon), of Englefield Rectory, Reading, Berkshire. Previously Vicar of Hughenden, Buckinghamshire.

Educated at Kent House, Eastbourne and Malvern College, Worcestershire. Gentleman Cadet at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Commissioned into the Royal Irish Rifles as a 2nd Lieutenant on 5 Oct 1910. Promoted to Lieutenant on 17 Mar 1914.

The 2nd Battalion was in Tidworth, part of 7th Brigade in 3rd Division, when WW1 started. They landed at Rouen in France on 14 August 1914. They fought at the First Battle of Aisne (12-15 Sep 1914).

Lieutenant Whitfeld was killed in action at La Croix Barbet, just east of Vieille-Chapelle, near Bethune, France on 14 Oct 1914 during the Battle of La Bassée (10 Oct-2 Nov 1914). He was mentioned in the despatches of Sir John French, 19 Oct 1914.

He was buried in Vieille-Chapelle New Military Cemetery, Vieille-Chapelle, Departement du Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France.

He is also commemorated on the Malvern College WW1 memorial board in the Malvern College Chapel, Great Malvern, Malvern Hills, Hereford And Worcester, England (see: https://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/56419), on the Malvern College Roll of Honour (see: http://www.stanwardine.com/cgi-bin/malvernww1.pl?id=439) and on a memorial in the Royal Memorial Chapel, RMA Sandhurst, Camberley, Surrey Heath Borough, Surrey, England.
