Son of Lieutenant-General Sir Herbert Taylor Macpherson VC, KCB, KCSI, (22 Jan 1827 – 20 Oct 1886) and Maria Macpherson (nee Eckford). He married Mary Margaret Josephine Home, daughter of Colonel Robert Home, CB, in Dehra Dun, Bengal, India on 26 Oct 1895 and had 4 children. Educated at Inverness College, Scotland. Gentleman Cadet at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Commissioned into the East Kent Regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant on 4 Jun 1890. Transferred to the Indian Army as a Lieutenant on 14 Sep 1891, joining the 2nd Battalion King George's Own Gurkha Rifles in Manipur. He saw active service in Isazai on the NW Frontier in 1892. In 1897-98 he took part in operations at Samana, the relief of Gulistan (medal and 2 clasps), the Tirah campaign 1897-98, including actions of Chagru Kotal, Dargai and of the Sampagha and the Arangha passes, operations in the Warran Valley at and around Dwatoi against the Khani Khel Chamkannis, and in the Barra valley, including various actions for which a clasp was added to his medal. He fought in the Second Anglo Boer War 1899-1902, including operations in the Transvaal and Orange River Colony (Queens Medal and 4 clasps). In Dec 1901 he was on special staff duty and from Dec 1902 to Jun 1904 he was Station Staff Officer at Agra, India. In 1911-12 he was on active service in Abor country (medal and clasp). Soon after the start of WW1 he deployed to France with his battalion. He was killed in action on 31 Oct 1914 near Neuve-Chapelle. His final resting place is unknown. He is commemorated on the Neuve-Chapelle Memorial.
