According to the 1958 article in the Brookville American and Marshall Genealogy, John was shanghied when he was 12, put aboard a trading vessel and brought to Virginia where he was sold as an apprentice to a Dutchman (Probally German) who mistreated him and he ran away. The record states he joined the Militia when he was 13 - this has not been documented.
