George was the son of Peter Lee Jr. and Margret Eoff. He was a farmer in Burnt Prairie, Illinois and a veteran of the Civil War, serving Company K, 87th Infantry, Illinois Volunteers on August 15, 1862 for the Union. He and his twin brother Andrew J. Lee were mustered in as privates on September 22, 1862 in Shawnetown, Illinois and were mustered out June 16, 1865. George married Mary Ann Carter in 1861 in White County.
