He was born and raised in Middlesex, Massachusetts, the son of Walter Thomas and Mary K Aitchison. He was one of 6 children born to Walter and Mary. He completed high school and was working as a clerk prior to enlisting.

He enlisted in the US Navy on 15 Jan 1942. After his initial basic training, he was eventually assigned to the USS Juneau on 14 Feb 1942 when the ship was commissioned. The USS Juneau (CL-52) was a United States Navy Atlanta-class light cruiser sunk at the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal in November 1942. In total 687 men, including S2C Aitchison, were killed in action as a result of its sinking.

S2C Aitchison was declared killed in action and buried at sea. His name appears on the Tablets of the Missing, located in Manila American Cemetery, Manila, Philippines. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal posthumously.
