Charles served as a First Lieutenant & Pilot on B-25C "The Happy Legend" #41-12907, 405th Bomber Squadron, 38th Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
He resided in Grant County, Indiana prior to the war.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on April 28, 1941, prior to the war, at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as an Actor and also as Single, without dependents.
He was married sometime after his enlistment.
B-25C #41-12907 took off, along with 8 other B-25's, from 7 Mile Drome (Jackson Airport) Central Province, Papua New Guinea near Port Moresby on a bombing mission against Japanese troop concentrations at Buna, Oro Province, Papua New Guinea. They were seen flying into a cloud bank and were not heard from again.
They had crashed in the vicinity of Lake Myola in the Owen Stanley Mountains near the Kokoda Gap, Central Province, Papua New Guinea. Due to the impact and their bomb load a large crater that was in time filled with water which made their location and later recovery very troubling.
After many recovery attempts over the years (which was hampered by the water that had filled the crater plus bombs that had not exploded) the entire crews remains were finally recovered in 2008.
Charles was first declared "Missing In Action" in this crash and his status was later changed to "Killed In Action" once his remains were recovered.
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
