He was born and raised in Munhall, Pennsylvania, the son of Clyde and Catherine Acheson. He was the oldest of two children born to Clyde and Catherine. His sister's name was Betty. He completed high school and was working as a craneman prior to enlisting. He was married to Catherine Olive Acheson. They were living in Munhall, Pennsylvania prior to his enlisting.

He enlisted in the US Navy on 15 Jan 1942 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After his initial basic training, he was eventually assigned to the USS Juneau on 14 Feb 1942 when the ship was commissioned. The USS Juneau (CL-52) was a United States Navy Atlanta-class light cruiser sunk at the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal in November 1942. In total 687 men, including FM3C Acheson, were killed in action as a result of its sinking.

FM3C Acheson was declared killed in action and buried at sea. His name appears on the Tablets of the Missing, located in Manila American Cemetery, Manila, Philippines. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal posthumously.
