He wrote a letter to his parents from Guam in September 1944 of how well he was doing.
The 306th Infantry Regiment departed San Francisco on 23 March 1944 and arrived in Hawaii on 1 April., 1944 The 306th first saw combat during the liberation of Guam in July, 1944. The 306th served in the liberation of the Philippines, arriving on 23 November 1944. It was here in brutal combat that Kenneth gave his life for his country and to save the world.

Mrs. Arnold Bishop of Middlesex avenue received word that her brother Pfc Kennard Gatcomb of Hancock, Me., was killed in action in Leyte on Dec. 11. Pfc. Gatcomb was well known in this town and received his training in Fort Jackson and Arizona and went overseas with the 77th division in Feb. 1944. He is survived by his parents, two sisters Mrs. Bishop of this town and Mrs. Otis Tholander of Billerica and a brother Walter of this town.

NUTTINGS LAKE ARMY ENGINEER KILLED IN ACTION: NO. CHELMSFORD ANTI-TANK MAN AMONG WOUNDED
LOWELL--A Nuttings Lake army engineer, previously reported missing in action, is now officially listed as killed in action, and a North Chelmsford anti-tank man was wounded in action in Germany in late Arpil, according to war department telegrams received here over the holiday. They are: KILLED PFC KENNARD GATCOMB, Winter street, Nuttings Lake.

Pfc. Kennard Gatcomb of Nuttings Lake, previously listed as missing in action on Leyte in the Philippines early in December, now is reported killed in action, according to a war department communication received by his sister, Mrs. Otis Tholander of Winter street.

WON PURPLE HEART
The young army engineer, who was awarded the Purple Heart and the presidential citation, entered the service early in 1942 from Hartford, Conn., where he was then employed. In April, 1944 he left for overseas and participated in the invasion of Guam. Formerly of Etna, Me., where his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Manard Gatcomb now reside, he made his home with his sister of Nuttings Lake. Also surviving him are two brothers, Walter of Wilmington and Frederick now in the army with an engineering unit in the South Pacific; and one other sister, Mrs. E. Gilbert of Newport, Me.
