Raymond Lloyd Adle was the son of Ephraim and Hazel V Adle, born June 3, 1923 in Trinidad, Las Animas, Colorado. He graduated from Trinidad High School. He then enlisted in the U. S. Army just as WWII was breaking out (Private, 440th Ord. Co.), was sent almost immediately to the Philippines, where he was captured by the Japanese. On September 7, 1944 he was being transported with other American prisoners of war on board the submarine Shinyu Maru and it was fired upon by American forces who were ignorant of the human cargo. Most prisoners died, including Raymond Adle. Posthumously, he was awarded a Purple Heart. His parents had died before he entered the army.
