Husband of Mrs. Russell E. Kerns who resided in Lake Placid, Florida.

Russell served as a Staff Sergeant & Gunner on B-24D #42-41117, 528th Bomber Squadron, 380th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Orange County, Florida prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on August 31, 1942 at Camp Blanding, Florida. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in construction and also as Married.

B-24D #42-41117 took off from APO #921 on a combat mission over Jefman Airfield, West Papua Province, Indonesia.

After a successful mission and while leaving the target they were attacked by Japanese Zeros and were shot down and crashed appx. 150 miles south of Jefman Island during the war. The entire crew was lost on this mission.

Russell was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.
