Coxswain John Clark Baker was one of the men that was lost when their ship, the light cruiser USS Juneau CL-52, was sunk by an enemy torpedo on November 13, 1942, following a gallant battle encounter with a superior Japanese force during the Naval battle for Guadalcanal. More than 900 United States Navy seamen and officers lost their lives along with their ship on that fateful day and none of the bodies were ever recovered.

He also has a memorial in the Chickamauga Cemetery, Chickamauga, Georgia:
