Vernal served as a Second Lieutenant & Pilot on A-20G #42-86625, 13th Bomber Squadron, 3rd Bomber Group, Light, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
He resided in Utah County, Utah prior to the war.
He enlisted in the Army on April 25, 1941, prior to the war, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in construction and also as Single, without dependents.
A-20G #42-86625 took off from Nadzab Airfield No. 4 (APO 713, Unit 1) on a low level strike against Boram Airfield west of Wewak.
When over the target, this aircraft was making a strafing run over the target and was last seen halfway down the run. It was later discovered that they ended up crashing into a hillside near Numoirum (Numoikum) to the southwest of Wewak during the war.
This A-20 was been found and 2nd Lt. Bird's remains were recovered, however the remains of S/Sgt Davis were not found and he is still listed as MIA.
Vernal was first declared "Missing In Action" in this crash. He is now listed as "Killed In Action".
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
