Sgt. James Schultz was a Wisconsin National Guardsman called to federal service when his tank company became A Company, 192nd Tank Battalion. He fought in some of the first tank battles of World War II involving American tanks. On April 9, 1942, he became a Prisoner of War and took part in the Bataan Death March. As a POW, he was held at Camp O'Donnell, Cabanatuan, and sent to Davao, Mindanao to build runways at an airfield. While being transported back to Manila, the ship he was on, the Shinyo Maru was attacked by an American submarine. The Japanese guards had warned the POWs that if the ship was attacked, they would kill the POWs. They kept their word. Sgt. James Schultz died during the sinking of the Shinyo Maru.
