Norman served as a Fireman Second Class, U.S.S. Monssen (DD-436), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Polk County, Nebraska prior to the war.

Norman was declared "Missing In Action" in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal during the war.

The Monssen was spotlighted and then hit by some 39 shells, including 3 of battleship caliber, and reduced to a burning hulk and sank in Ironbottom Sound.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
