Tuskahoma Soldier Killed In Action In New Guinea June 24
TALIHINA, Okla. (Special)--Pfc. Wayne R. Shoemate, 29, of Tuskahoma, was killed in action in New Guinea, June 24, according to information received from the War Department by his wife.
Private Shoemate was drafted Jan. 18, 1943, through the Pushmataha County board, and was assigned to the Anti-Aircraft Corps, most of his training being done at Camp Haan, Calif.
He was born Oct. 12, 1944 [this is an obvious error] at Tuskahoma, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Shoemate, and attended Tuskahoma schools.
He was the last one of the five boys in the family to enter the armed forces. Since then one brother, Carl, received a discharge because of over-age and another, Ralph, received a medical discharge.
Surviving relatives besides his wife, the former Miss Eula Spencer of Tuskahoma, include his mother, four brothers, Carl Shoemate, Miami, Ariz.; Ralph Shoemate, Talihina; Pfc. Everett Shoemate, Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas, and Sgt. Ernest C. Shoemate, Camp Barkeley, Texas, and two sisters, Dorothy Shoemate and Lois Shoemate, both of Tuskahoma.
The chaplain who conducted the funeral services, Mathias N. Joeasuu stated in an letter to Mrs. Eula Shoemate, "Wayne was well liked by his soldier-friends and his officers. His service record was excellent, and he had been awarded the Good Conduct Medal."
