James came to Allamakee County Iowa in the spring of 1854, with a wagon train led by his father Elisha Harris. He married Margaret Jane Jamison in Post Twp on 16 Oct 1874. Only their son Alton survived to adulthood. He retired from farming in 1893 and moved to town. In 1900 he started a combination furniture store / undertaking parlor. In 1907 he sold the furniture part of the business. In 1916 he sold half interest in the undertaking business to Louis Schutte. He retired from the business in 1919. He is reported to have made sure that all graves at the Postville cemetery had flowers on decoration day.
