Pte. A. H. Smith (Bert) was the son Mrs Smith, of Cobden street, Mt. Pleasant. He was 27 years of age, and a linotype operator, and at one time was employed at "The Courier." When the war broke out he was engaged on a Hobart newspaper, and he was one of the first to volunteer. He landed at Gallipoli with the 3rd Brigade,. and he was killed on 8th August. He was in the trenches continuously, and was in good health and spirits. He was very popular with his comrades. He was well-known in athletic circles in Ballarat as he was a prominent member of the Ballarat Harriers, and won many valuable prizes. A brother of the deceased in at the Albert Park camp. He tried three times before the doctors would pass him, and he is every anxious to get to the front and join his three cousins.
