John was born in Yadkin Co., NC on June 9, 1866 the son of Thomas Jefferson and Lucy Marler Poindexter. John is buried beside his 2nd wife Augusta Martin Smith Poindexter. John's 1st wife was Mary Prim who he married in Yadkin Co., NC on Feb. 16, 1890. Mary Prim was born on Jan. 17, 1872 and died Mar. 4, 1896. John & Mary had three children: Lucy Viola (Watkins) b. Aug. 1, 1891; Lela Viola b. Sept. 4, 1893 and Cora Samantha b. Sept. 11, 1895 all of who were born in NC. John and his 2nd wife Augusta Martin Smith had five children: Eugenia (Manning) b. abt. 1896; John Jefferson Jr. b. July 5, 1898; Nannie b. Sept. 5, 1899; Robert b. June 22, 1901 and Archie R. b. May 1, 1903 all were born in IN. Also buried in the Mooreland Cemetery is John's brother, Thomas Monroe Poindexter and his wife, Emily J. Jester.

Obituary - J.J. Poindexter, Messick Farmer, Dies in Hospital
John J. Poindexter, 84, a well-known farmer of the Messick community, died Monday evening in the Henry County Hospital following an illness of three weeks. Mr. Poindexter was a native of North Carolina and had lived here since 1901. He was a member of the Nazarene church.
Surviving are five daughters: Mrs. Gill Watkins, New Castle; Mrs. Ed Swoveland, of near Messick; Mrs. Thruman Rosaa, Mooreland; Mrs. Frank Manning, Cleveland, OH and Mrs. Raymond Martin, New Castle; two step-daughters, Mrs. John Hill and Mrs. Robert Choplin both of Winston-Salem, NC; three sons, John Poindexter Jr., Dublin; Robert, New Castle; Archie, Parker; two step-sons, Luther and Tom Smith, New Castle; 23 grandchildren; and 40 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2:30 in the North Christian Church, Mooreland with Rev. Carl Hilbert and Rev. John Hancock officiating. Burial will be in the Mooreland Cemetery. Friends may call at the Main and Frame Funeral in Mooreland after 7 o'clock this evening.
