Mrs. Marguerite Cheatham Hill was born in Oklahoma City, Okla. on Oct. 9, 1918, to Lonnie and Ada (Harris) Cheatham. Her given name was Anna Marguerite Cheatham; in later years she dropped Anna because she preferred to be called Marguerite. Mrs. Hill passed away in Kyle on March 30, 2010.

She has lived in San Marcos since the age of six months. She attended and graduated from "The San Marcos Colored" school. She later went to college at Huston-Tillotson for three years.

Mrs. Hill became a member of Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Church at an early age. She enjoyed working in the church and has held many offices in the church throughout her life. Mrs. Hill has been a delegate at the annual conference representing Wesley Chapel Church for many years. The Church Fellowship Hall was renamed Lucille Cheatham-Marguerite Cheatham Hill Fellowship Hall in honor of Mrs. Hill and the late Mrs. Lucille Cheatham.

Marguerite worked at Southwest Texas State University for 20 years until her retirement. Some of her special skills and favorite hobbies were visiting and reading to nursing home residents in the community. She loved to volunteer and visit the Henry Bush Child Development Center. She also loved visiting hospitals and cheering people up. She really enjoyed helping people.

Mrs. Hill accomplished a lot of achievements in her life. Some of them include The Lizzy Grant Award, The Hall of Fame Award and The Missionary Society Woman of the Year Award. (These awards all recognize outstanding citizens who have given a lot to their community).

Some of the organizations and events that Mrs. Hill has participated in include American Woodsman #127, The Order of Eastern Star, Church Women United, Hays County Extension, NAACP, Women of Wisdom and Carver Court of Calanthean #93, (an organization in which Mrs. Hill received her 50th year membership pin in 2009).

Mrs. Hill is very well loved and known throughout the community. She was a Historian for Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Church and the community of San Marcos, and served on several auxiliary boards in the church; she had a brilliant memory that could never be replaced.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Lee Hill; fathers, Lonnie Cheatham and Anthony Giles; mother, Ada Giles; sisters, Helen Cheatham, Lionell Fields and Aileen Giles Coby; brother, Bruce Giles; nephews, Anthony Jackson and Sam Jackson and niece Ada Jean Henson.
