Roger Lucy, Sauk Rapids
1916 - 2009

Roger M. Lucy, 92, of Sauk Rapids, formerly of Blackduck, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009 at St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud.

He was born on Oct. 25, 1916, to Michael and Mary (Loomis) Lucy in Missouri Valley, Iowa. He graduated from Missouri Valley High School in 1935. He married Marguerite Lucy on July 1, 1938, in Papillion, Neb. They lived in Papillion, Neb.; Chicago, Ill.; and Missouri Valley, Iowa; Aitkin, Minn.; Delano Minn.; Lincoln, Neb.; and Blackduck.

He worked on the Chicago Railroad from 1937-1938; Manager of C. Thomas Store of Princeton, Minn., from 1938-1939; Burlington Railroad in Nebraska from 1943-1945; Iron Range Railroad (Mesabi) in 1946; L.B. Hartz Store in Blackduck as a meat cutter from 1948-1981, when he retired. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Blackduck.

He loved his God and this love was followed by the love of his dear wife and family. In his wife's later years when she was held prisoner of her dark disease, he stayed with her every day to love, comfort her and lead her through her frightening journey.

He was a big time music lover and was very proud of his children's musical abilities. He enjoyed camping and traveling, and had traveled through over 30 states. He really loved his Irish heritage and it was a big milestone in his life when he returned to the land of his ancestors in 2006 when he traveled to Ireland.

Like his father before him he started out working for the railroad and he started his love for steam trains all through his life. During World War II, he worked on the Alcan or Alaskan highway — a project that was vital to our country's security.

He loved to laugh and he really loved watching old "Laurel & Hardy" movies. He was an avid reader and kept up on current news events. His math ability was phenomenal. He could fill up a grocery cart and tell the checker what the bill was before they rang it up on the computer.

He was on the Blackduck School Board for 3 years, and 29 years as Hornet Township Fire Warden.

He loved to dress "spiffy" in nice suits and hats, etc. To say he was a hard worker was an understatement.

He is survived by children: Patricia Good, Independence, Mo., Michael (Marlys) Lucy, Fergus Falls, Suzanne (Jim) Howlett, Independence, Mo., Tom Lucy, Blackduck, Ken (Laurie) Lucy, Sartell, Laura (Mike) Smith, Anchorage, AK, Monica (Brian) Houglum, Grand Marais; 16 grandchildren: Tammy (Good) Cappatocio, Paul Good, Scott Lucy, Terri (Lucy) Cadwallader, Roger Lucy, Julie (Howlett) Smith, David Howlett, Mark Howlett, Michael Howlett, Krissy (Lucy) Keeney, Katy (Lucy) Syed, Michael Smith, Sarah (Smith) Dickson, MatthewBurgoon, Shannon Burgoon, Kevin (KC) Burgoon; 14 great grandchildren: Kody Good, Chase Good, Angela Cappatocio, Christopher Cappatocio, Bailey Lucy, Toni Cadwallader, Dylan Cadwallader, Zachary Lucy, Keegan Lucy, Erich Keeney, Andrew Keeney, Elizabeth Smith, Nolan Lucy, Aayan Syed; Brothers-in-law, Harlan Lewis, Sister-in-law Virginia ( Ray) Rourk.
