Edwin Leander Talbert, 78, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at his home in Garden City. He was born Feb. 25, 1923, at Alexander, the son of Bessteena and Ina (Jones) Talbert. He attended schools at Larned, Dodge City and Boise City, Okla. Mr. Talbert served with Headquarters Company 145th Regiment, 37th Infantry Division in the Soloman Islands and the Philippine Islands in the South Pacific during World War II, serving from 1942 through 1945. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor on Luzon Island in the Philippines. A Garden City resident for 50 years, he was employed by the Santa Fe Railway Co. for 42 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and American Legion Post No. 9, and enjoyed fishing, gardening, and spending time with friends and family. In 1948, he married Marilyn Davidson at Cimarron. On May 29, 1958, he married Shirley Hankins at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Sandra Russell, Garden City; a sister, Mary Ryersee, Great Bend; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Michelle Annette Aronchick; and two sisters, Berniece Harnar and Helen Sheldon Eckles. Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City. Visitation hours are from 5 to 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
