Nell was born in Iron Gate, VA and was the daughter of William Henry Slough and Ellen May Cummings Slough. She married John Raleigh Torbert on 11/17/1928 in Clifton Forge, VA. They had 8 children. Their first born, Mary Ellen, died of pneumonia when she was only 4 months old. Mary Ellen is buried at the Crown Hill Cemetery in Clifton Forge, VA.
In addition to being a wife and mother, Nell worked as a seamstress after WWII until she retired at the age of 62. She participated in many community causes and organizations. She was a Christian, was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was the first woman deaconess of that church.
Nell was very involved with her family, her children and grandchildren. She had an incredible memory and was an unbelievable conversationist. She loved talking to everyone and showed a genuine interest in their life.
