Raymond Jay Heckendorn
Born October 29, 1929 in Puyallup, WA.; died January 20, 2008 in Santa Monica, Ca. Ray, an ordained minister, with dual standing in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ, retired after a long career serving local congregations in Washington, Oregon, and Texas and serving at regional and national church levels.

Married in 1949, to Mary Louise Dornhecker of Dallas, OR, he was widowed in 1961 and is survived by their son, two daughters, and their spouses: Mark Heckendorn and Dr. Katherine Edwards of Santa Monica, CA, Christine Heckendorn and Rev. Del Miller of Granite City, IL, and Cathryn Heckendorn-Vacek and Joe Vacek of Richmond, TX.

A noted speaker, Ray received a Bachelor of Theology degree from Northwest Christian College in Eugene, OR, and the Master of Divinity degree from Brite Divinity School, Texas Christian University, Ft. Worth, TX. In 1967 he was appointed the Texas and Louisiana Field Representative for the National Benevolent Association, the group responsible for Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) social and health services.

In 1969 he became Vice President for Development at NBA's St. Louis, MO, central office, where he served until 1983. He is credited in the 1987 book, Inasmuch- the Saga of NBA, by Hiram and Marjorie Lester, with making NBA's Development Department, "the first professionalized fund raising agency found in any national unit of the Christian Church." Ray was a Fellow of the National Association for Hospital Development and a Certified Fund Raising Executive of the National Society of Fund Raising Executives.

In 1982 he was recognized as Fund Raiser of the Year by the St. Louis Regional Chapter of the NSFRE. After leaving NBA, Ray, a firm believer in Christian unity, expanded his personal ministry and provided fund raising counsel to many charitable organizations and church denominations.

In 1986 Ray returned to his home town and many friends in Puyallup and continued his work with churches and charitable organizations, including several years working with the Washington North Idaho Conference of the United Church of Christ in Seattle. He was very active with the Puyallup Christian Church where he was ordained in 1951 and the Puyallup Kiwanis Club, where he served on the board of the Puyallup Kiwanis Foundation and enjoyed playing the role of Santa Clause for the annual Kiwanis holiday activities.

In 1986, he married Imogene Larine Bertram of Puyallup. They were married until her death in 2003. In 2005 he moved to Santa Monica, Ca with his son and daughter-in-law. In Santa Monica he first resided at Sunrise assisted living. In 2006 he moved to Ocean Terrance board and care, where he lived until his final illness.
