In the Ventura Star Free Press edition of July 7, 1943, an article noted: "Zephan Barrows, Missing in Action, brother of Mrs. Clarence Mattson, in European area, the War Department announced today. Barrows, a graduate of Ventura High School, took his Army Air Force Technical Training at Sheppard Field, TX."

Zephan, although born in Washington state, was raised in Ventura, California, the son of Francis "Frank" M. and Mattie (Green) Barrows. He was one of six children (Romie, Edna, Dorothy, Oris, Buell, and himself). In 1922, when he was just 13 years old, both his mother and older brother Buell Barrows died. Buell was shot to death while on a date in a car near the beach in Ventura in an unsolved murder. A brief time later, his mother Mattie (Green) Barrows, died of grief over the murder of her son Buell.

Zephan joined the Air Force during World War II. Per information uncovered by a researcher (Kent Porter) as reported in "Losses of the U.S. 8th and 9th Air Forces"-Vol 1, by Bishop and Hey, the following was the fate of TSGT Barrows and his crewmembers: "Lost to fighters, crew bailed out over the coastal area northwest of Kiel Bay but a strong westerly wind blew them out over the Baltic Sea. The navigator, Lt. Decaro, was picked up from the Baltic by a German Navy boat. A/C crashed at Dorphof, six miles south of Kappeln, Flensburg, Germany. 8 KIA, 2 POW. The Radio Operator, Ball Turret Gunner, & Left Waist Gunner are commemorated on the Wall of the Missing Netherlands Cemetery. The Tail Gunner is buried in Plot A-32-29 Ardennes Cemetery. The other four crewmembers were reinterred in the USA. T/Sgt Barrows died in captivity on 19 July 1943." (The final date on SGT Barrows marker at Ivy Lawn Cemetery, June 13, 1943, was the day his aircraft crashed.)

Sgt Barrows was the Engineer/Top Turret Gunner.
