Death came Friday afternoon to Hiram Walter Hartenbower, 73, a lifelong resident of Douglass and this community. He had suffered a heart attack that morning and others through the day.
He was born at Douglass, KS, January 30, 1886, the son of Hiram Walter and Lorena D. Livingston Hartenbower. He grew up here, attending Douglass schools, then taking up farming in the Floral section, north of Douglass. He was married to Mary E. Woods on November 30, 1910, and they lived on the farm until retiring and moving to Douglass a number of years ago.
Mrs. Hartenbower survives, also one sister, Mrs. Vera (C.P) Blood of Douglass; two nephews Walter Woods Wakefield of Mandan, North Dakota, William Walter Hartenbower, Alva, OK; and two nieces Mrs. Cecile McLaughlin, Clearwater; and Mrs. Mildred Wilson of Chicopee Falls, Mass. After the death of their father, Cecil Wakefield, Walter Hartenbower became a father to Walter, Cecile and Mildred Wakefield, and looked after them all the years they were growing up. Walter Wakefield lived with the Hartenbowers much of the time and worked on the farm.
Funeral services were held at 2:30pm. Sunday from the Douglass Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. W. T. Wilkoff. Burial was in the Douglass Cemebery, in charge of Hilyard Funeral Home.
Singers for the service were H.D. Olmstead, S.S. Olmstead, Richard Taylor and Joe L. Guyot, with Mrs. C. A. Ogg, organist.
Active bearers were Elmer Martin, Lawrence Hall, Ernest Price, Jr., Glenn Hensley, J. H. Butler and J. L. Taylor. Honorary bearers were Dr. C.A. Ogg, Frank Wakefield, W.R. Cronk, Walter Martin, J.M. Guyot, Jess Darter, Harold House, A.W. Scott, Virgil Hall, Paul Guyot and Elmer Elder.
