Laura Elizabeth Karr, 91, of Chico, died peacefully of natural causes at home, with family by her side, on Monday, August 11, 2008. She was born February 18, 1917 to Barney and Beulah Mae (James) Yutterman in Fort Smith, AR.

She had 12 brothers and sisters. In September of 1935, she married Otis Albert Karr of Fort Smith, AR, with whom she moved to Chico in 1945. Known as an excellent cook, Laura began a career in food services at Notre Dame Elementary School in Chico in 1958, where her lunches were favored by many children--some of whom snuck back to eat Mrs. Karr's lunches after going on to high school. On weekends, she frequently catered weddings. Later, Laura accepted a job at Butte College where she built Food Services from a lunch cart into a thriving and popular cafeteria. After retiring, she spent many happy hours with grandchildren and visiting Reno with her husband, Otis. She was also an active member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

She is survived by one sister, Stella McGrath, 95, of St. Louis, MO, and by her five children, Jim Karr, of Pleasant Hill, CA, Mary Lou Thompson, of Ventura, CA, Joe Karr, of Fort Smith, AR, Glenda Reager, of Sacramento, CA, and Joyce Vernoga, of Chico. Laura and Otis had 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held Thursday, August 14, 2008 at Brusie Funeral Home, 626 Broadway St., Chico, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with a Rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, August 15, 2008 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 416 Chestnut St. in Chico.
