Marion Willford Hardman was one of the founders, President and General Manager of the Hardman Lumber Company.

M. W. Hardman, or "Billy as he was known to friends all over the country, entered the lumber business in his early teens, shortly after the accidental death of his father.
As the oldest of seven children, he took on the burden of helping his mother by doing numerous jobs around Downs.

In 1887, he went to Sheridan Lake, Colorado, as manager of a lumber yard, and was there about two years. On returning to Downs he worked for the C. P. Craney Lumber Company. Then in 1892, he, together with H. H. Welty and W. H. Noll, organized the Central Lumber Company. In 1903, Marion Hardman withdrew from Central Lumber Company, taking with him two yards--Phillipsburg and Osborne. This was the beginning of the Hardman Lumber Company.

In 1917, having lived in Phillipsburg for nearly twenty years, Marion W. Hardman moved his family back to Downs where he remained until his death of a heart attack on March 22, 1945.
