Lt. Joseph De Gennaro was born and raised in Forrest Hills, Queens County, New York City. He was the son of Joseph and Patience De Gennaro. Schooled in New York City, he eventually attended Eastern Military Academy in Cold Spring Harbor, New York. Upon graduation while living in Sound Beach, New York, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and eventually attained the rank of lieutenant. He began his tour of Viet Nam on September 1, 1965 with ADV Team 100 HQ, MACV Advisors. MACV. His MOS was Operations & Training Staff Officer (G3-S3) (Ranger Qual). On January 16, 1966, while on patrol with his squad, he was mortally wounded by a land mine near the town of Chau Hiep at Ton Son Hut, Viet Nam. He died of his wounds nine days later.
