William enlisted in the Union army at Chillicothe, Missouri on January 26, 1862 and was in the 23rd Missouri Infantry, Company F through January 24, 1864, when he was discharged at McMinnville, TN. But, the very next day, January 25, 1864, he re-enlisted at McMinnville and joined up with 23rd MO Inf., Company A. His final discharge at the end of the war was on July 18, 1865 at Louisville, KY.
In his later years, William was in and out of Homes for Disabled Soldiers all over the country (Indiana, Kansas, Tennessee, Ohio, Virginia, etc.). In most of those stays, he gave his cousin, Miss Mollie Pickens, as his next of kin contact, but in his last ones, he gave his nephew, Samuel T. Couch, as the contact. He was the informant on the death certificate for my great-grandfather, Joel Couch, in Chillicothe, MO in 1914, but probably called Quincy, Illinois his home. The family probably first found out about William's passing when Samuel was contacted by a train depot in Washington, DC trying to locate the owner of William's baggage that was left at the station.
William died in Washington, DC on Dec. 13, 1919 and was buried in Arlington on Dec. 17, 1919 (on what would have been his 75th birthday). He was the last of the 12 children of John & Elizabeth (Smith) Couch of Greene County, Tennessee to pass on...
