George W. Duncan was born May 18, 1845, near Winchester,Franklin County, Tennessee. Enlisted in the Confederate Army in July, 1862, at Louden [Loudon Co.], TN, as private in Co. D, 17th TN Regiment, Infantry; Gen. Bushrod Johnson's brigade, Cheatham's division, Hardee's corps, Army of TN.

The regiment was sent with Longstreet to attack Burnside at Knoxville, TN and on to VA. Where George W. Duncan remained until the end of the war.

Wounded at Beans Station (took a shot to the arm between his elbow and wrist) taken prisoner, with the most of the regiment, at Petersburg, VA,in June, 1864.Sent to Point Lookout, MD, and then to Elmira, NY. He was a prisoner for 8 months.

Returned to his Home Plantation April, 1865, to find everything destroyed.
