Katharine was the daughter of attorney John Calvin Day, granddaughter of Isabella Beecher Hooker, and grandniece of Harriet Beecher Stowe.

She studied art and painting in Paris and was politically active in New York City (playing a pivotal role in defeating Tammany Hall). She received a Masters Degree in Psychology from Radcliffe College, and later earned a second Masters Degree in History from Trinity College.

Katharine was instrumental in saving Mark Twain's old home in Hartford from demolition. She went on to establish the Stowe-Day foundation for the purpose of maintaining the Harriet Beecher Stowe House and Research Library.
