Miss Kelly's parents were John and Margaret Cody Kelly., both born in Corpus Christi. Her father's parents were Martin and Mary Gilmore Kelly, who came to Corpus Christi from Ireland in the 1840's when Texas was a republic. Her mother's parents William and Catherine Furlong Cody, came from Wexford, Ireland in the 1850's. According to his obituary, published in the Corpus Christi Caller in 1899, Martin Kelly was "one of the state's most noted Indian fighters." The ranches started by Martin and John Kelly in Corpus Christi and in Comstock, Texas are still owned by the family.

Miss Kelly attended Incarnate Word Academy in Corpus Christi and graduated from Our Lady of the Lake High School in San Antonio in 1918. She was a life-long member of the Corpus Christi Cathedral parish and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She will be remembered for her many works of charity, including having a chapel built in Comstock, and for her devotion to her family. She spent many years personally caring for her mother, her sisters, and her nieces and nephews.
